DUI Accidents and Arrests on the Rise During the Holiday Season

Posted on in DUI

San Jose DUI attorney, DUI accidents, DUI arrests, holiday DUI, drunk drivingThis past Thanksgiving weekend was an especially deadly time on roads in the Bay Area and throughout California. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that there were 76 fatalities in vehicle collisions throughout the state, and 1,057 people were arrested for DUI, which was a 17 percent increase from the previous year.

As the holiday season begins in earnest, drivers should be aware that the rate of drunk driving accidents increases significantly during the weeks surrounding the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Between two and three times more fatalities from alcohol-related crashes occur during this season than during other times of the year. As a result, law enforcement will be increasing their efforts to stop drunk driving and increase safety on the road during the holidays.

Avoiding a DUI Arrest

Many people will be attending parties and social events throughout the month of December, and these gatherings often involve the consumption of alcohol. At these types of events, people often do not realize that their ability to drive is impaired. Still, they should be aware that driving after consuming any amount of alcohol will make them more likely to be pulled over on suspicion of DUI.

During the holiday season, police officers will be making extra efforts to stop drunk driving, including maintaining sobriety checkpoints and conducting saturation patrols which specifically look for people who may be driving while impaired. During these patrols, police officers will be on the lookout for the signs of drunk driving, which can include:

  • Swerving;
  • Tailgating;
  • Speeding or driving very slowly;
  • Unsafe lane changes;
  • Loud music;
  • Driving with headlights off or high beams on;
  • Driving on the wrong side of the road;
  • Stopping erratically; and
  • Making wide, abrupt, or illegal turns.

To avoid DUI arrests during the holiday season, drivers, passengers, and party hosts and attendees should use the following strategies:

  • Have someone act as a designated driver;
  • Use a taxi or ride-sharing service or ask someone for a ride;
  • Confiscate the keys of someone who has been drinking and arrange other forms of transportation; and
  • Offer non-alcoholic drinks and plenty of food at parties.
